Dr. Shakhawat H. Firoz is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Provost of Sher-e Bangla Hall, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He is the Former Head of the Department. Dr. Firoz has completed his Bachelor of Science (Hons.) and Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has a Doctor of Engineering degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Firoz has professional experience in different institutes in Bangladesh and Japan besides BUET viz. Researcher (AIST, Japan), Scientific Officer (BCSIR), Assistant Professor (Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, and Jagannath University). He has experience in designing functional materials and experimental setups for material characterization. He has a keen research interest in nanostructured material design and facile synthesis of nanomaterial and nanocomposite for their viable applications in energy storage and wastewater treatment, cellulose-based functionalized nanomaterials for bio-applications, and thermophysical properties of materials. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles. He has also been involved in administrative, extra-academic, and co-academic activities. He served the Department of Chemistry, BUET as Head, Assistant Provost, Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, Postgraduate tabulator, and Board of Postgraduate Studies Secretary of the Department of Chemistry. He is an expert member of different universities and government organizations. He served BUET Teachers’ Club as a General Secretary (2020-21) and President (2022-23). Now, he is the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Chemical Society. Dr. Firoz is an active social worker and served the nation with his technical expertise on issues of chemicals in different events and crises in Bangladesh. His initiative of the ‘Hand Sanitizer Project’ during the coronavirus pandemic is mentionable.
